Advances in information and communications technologies are transforming how businesses operate and interact with their customers.
Key enabling technologies, such as cloud computing, social media, mobile, big data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and blockchain, are disrupting all aspects of the finance value chain and facilitating unprecedented levels of innovation in financial services.
In this dynamic environment, professionals need to be agile and informed in order to keep pace with the rapid development of financial technology (FinTech) and its adoption and application in the financial services industry.
This FinTech – Financial Technology and Innovation micro-credential explores the interaction of finance and technology and its impact on the financial services industry.
The main objectives of this FinTech – Financial Technology and Innovation micro-credential are to:
(1) deepen learners’ practical knowledge of the FinTech landscape and resulting innovation in financial services,
(2) encourage learners to think critically across a range of finance and technology contexts and interfaces, and
(3) discern the challenges and complex issues pertaining to this rapidly evolving space. Drawing on both academic literature and industry practice, the course will allow learners to make an evidence-based appraisal of FinTech trends and modern financial innovation. Students will also gain a practical understanding of the regulatory, compliance, and ethical context.
This micro-credential will be delivered by Programme Director Professor Michael Dowling, an esteemed expert in the field in collaboration with IFS Skillnet.
What you'll learn
On successful completion of this micro-credential the learner will be able to:
- Acquire a practical understanding of the FinTech landscape and modern financial innovation.
- Synthesise theory and practice to assess the interaction of finance and technology in various contexts.
- Appraise how the financial services industry is innovating through the adoption and application of new technologies.
- Critically evaluate the emerging academic evidence pertaining to the dynamics and efficacy of new FinTech based markets and products.
- Develop and defend coherent and persuasive arguments for the adoption and application of innovative technologies to support financial services activities.
- Evaluate the competitive and collaborative opportunities that exist for established financial institutions and start-up FinTech firms, which should lead to a superior customer journey for consumers of financial services.
Requirements
For admission to the FinTech – Financial Technology and Innovation micro-credential candidates must hold one of the following:
- A 2:1 Honours degree in a relevant discipline eg. Finance, Business or Information Technology, or equivalent international qualification.
- A Level 7 qualification in a relevant discipline or non-chartered membership of a professional body, along with at least 3 years relevant managerial work experience.
- Chartered membership of a relevant financial education institution (please contact us to check)
- Evidence of substantial relevant managerial work experience. Such applicants will be required to submit a CV and Personal Statement in support of their application and may be required to attend for interview.
Things to note:
- Applicants who have achieved a 2.2 Honours degree may still obtain a place. This will depend on availability of places and on obtaining high grades in relevant modules on their undergraduate programme.
- International candidates who are non-native speakers of English must satisfy the University of their competency in the English language.
- Applicants who require a study visa for the purposes of studying at DCU, are advised to apply as early as possible. If you need a study visa and are a Non EU student, you are not eligible to apply for part time programmes as study visas are only granted for full time programmes.
- There is no availability for a deferred entry onto a micro-credential.
