This micro-credential is for professionals who work with &nbsp;spatial data and/or maps and would like to have the ability to analyse this data and create new maps and spatial information.
The production of good informative maps and the analysis of &nbsp;spatial data are valuable but scarce skill sets. With developments in GPS, mobile devices, and software, organisations are now collecting more and more spatial data and need spatial specialists to manage, analyse and report this data. 
Local authorities, civil engineering consultancies, environmental agencies, utility companies, among others, are increasing their use of GIS to manage their valuable spatial data.
This micro-credential will enable learners to get a practical introduction to the QGIS open-source software and will use the software to address an issue in their field. 
Examples of projects completed by students recently include the identification of the best location for a new waste-to-energy plant, a study of the relationship between tree cover and household income, the siting of a new mass-vaccination centre, a study of the effect of green-ways on the local population. In each of these, publicly available spatial data was used to investigate a topical issue.

Air pollution represents a global health challenge and is directly contributing to climate change. It is present in both outdoor and indoor environments. To address air pollution effectively, we need to fully understand the complex mix of pollutants.
This micro-credential provides valuable insight into air pollutants, focusing on how we measure and assess the challenge at individual, local, national, and global levels. The course provides learners with the skills to effectively monitor campaigns, perform informed assessment studies, and design or select appropriate control technologies and strategies to improve air quality.
This micro-credential will appeal to working professionals in the public or private sector responsible for air quality monitoring and assessment, with responsibilities in air quality reporting, or who have a role in air pollution mitigation and adaptation in either the indoor or outdoor environment.

Air Pollution: Monitoring Assessment and Control

This module aims to provide a general overview of key environmental concepts such as climate change, plastic pollution, principles of sustainability, sustainable development goals, and biodiversity. It will briefly explore how perspectives from psychology, sociology, communication, circular and doughnut economy, and the study of ethics and governance provide us with insights into how perception and behaviour influence responses to environmental issues. In addition, the life-cycle of materials, and the environmental impact of the resources and equipment typically used in scientific laboratories will be examined in some detail. These ideas will form the backdrop to a focused study on how the organisation of, and practices in, scientific laboratories can be reformed to reduce their environmental footprint and be established on a more sustainable basis.

INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

This module in-stills a critical skill set in modern risk management; producing dimensioned drawings from accurate fieldwork methodology. Accuracy in describing the reality of the built environment is critical in many areas of risk such as overcrowding, travel distances, ventilation rates, and universal access. The attention to detail required in this skill allows the development of a technical understanding of domestic and commercial construction technology as well as the inter-relationship between building technology human health and environmental management. Specialist skills in Building Assessment as well as skills in critical and analytical thinking and accuracy will be developed in a work-related curriculum setting. It also looks at the nature cause and control of fire. It includes a technical analysis of fire and the control strategies available to prevent fire and control its spread. Emphasis is placed on fire risk assessment methodologies available together with an appreciation of the role of human behaviour in evacuation strategies. Active and passive fire safety elements of buildings are presented together with best practice models for fire safety management. Specialist skills in Fire Safety as well as skills in critical and analytical thinking, and collaboration and team-work will be developed in a work-related curriculum setting.

Building Assessment and fire Safety

Environmental Impact Assessment for Marine Renewable Energy Developments (MRED) is a complex multidisciplinary exercise requiring co-ordinated activity by ecologists, engineers, planners, device manufacturers and construction contractors among others. While the needs of each MRED are unique, every EIA should address the concerns of the public and regulators, in a manner specific to the site, in line with best practise guidelines.Developed by University of Galway, in partnership with Industry, this Micro-Credential offers a unique combination of research-led teaching and problem-based learning to provide a comprehensive understanding of the key issues influencing the future of energy sustainability.  It will equip learners with the knowledge and tools to develop Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIAR), in line with best practise guidelines in cooperation with regulators, ecological specialists and the site development team. Learners will be skilled in dealing with the ecological assessment needs of the industry in general, and their own company and site-specific developments in particular. Learners will also develop a peer network of MRED professionals, to facilitate the sharing of best practise and innovation, as technology evolves and new areas are developed. The target audience of this micro-credential will be professionals involved in the energy sector who wish to understand more about environmental impact assessment in the planning process. It will also be of interest to graduates pursuing a career in the energy sector.This course has been approved for funding, for professionals employed in the renewables sector.
