Biocompatibility and Device Design

As our climate deteriorates, extreme climatic events such as floods, storms, wildfires, landslides, and heatwaves will become more common, with more and more people, places, and infrastructure vulnerable. Planning for the future must account for potential vulnerability to more frequent climate hazards.This module will examine the nature, extent, frequency, risk, and potential for adaption and mitigation against a range of climate hazards, including flooding, wildfires, landslides, and heatwaves. Drawing heavily on case studies, including media coverage and the academic literature, students will explore these hazards from both physical and social geographic perspectives. They will consider the causes and geographic distribution of these natural events, as well as examining how risk, vulnerability, and consequences vary in different geographic areas due to geology, geomorphology, hydrology, demographics, socioeconomic factors, and more. They will develop the skills necessary to assess the hazardousness of particular geographic areas, to cartographically illustrate risk by creating hazard maps, and to use geospatial data on climate hazards to inform decision-making and strategies for adaption and mitigation.

The growing recognition of the importance of environmental protection comes at a time when technological advances have made geospatial and spatiotemporal data more available than ever. From Earth monitoring satellites to environmental sensors, IoT devices, and smartphones, the range of data and data collection tools available provides us with unprecedented opportunities to make informed decisions on issues potentially impacting the environment.This module will train students in the use of open source and/or commercial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyse environmental and other geospatial data. Topics to be covered include:Types of data: vector (point, line, and polygon), raster, and attribute geospatial data 	Importing primary and secondary data into GIS software	Choosing and working with geographic and projected coordinate reference systems	Manipulating geospatial data using geometric, geoprocessing, and analysis tools, including plugins and extensions	Working with geospatial temporal data	Illustrating geospatial data through the production of maps and animated images

Environmental Geospatial Data Analysis

This module is
designed to equip the students with all the tools needed to be able to record
the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Corundum, Diamond, Tanzanite,
Topaz, Tourmaline) including materials of organic nature (e.g. Opal). The students will be able to identify the main
organic and inorganic gemstones correctly and will
also be introduced to
diamond grading and gemstones marketing and valuations.Practicals on campus on Saturday mornings at 10 am till 4:30 pm (including up to 1 hour lunch
break) on the following dates:

Improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints and energy costs is a priority for many organisations. An Energy Management System (EnMS) can play a lead role in achieving these aims. An EnMS is a process for continually improving energy performance. Suitable for all organisations, whatever the size or sector, it is particularly beneficial in organisations operating energy intensive processes. This module prepares the graduate for managing energy in industry according to the energy management standard (i.e. ISO 50001). Tools and methodologies for energy management will be presented along side case studies.

Hand specimens will be studied using some basic gemmological instrumentations and students will be taught how to record the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Garnet) including materials of an organic nature (e.g. Amber). Recording Natural Gemstone Properties

In this Micro-credential, we aim to provide beekeepers with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to identify the criteria needed to raise healthy honeybees. Key to this is good animal husbandry and knowledge of pests and diseases of the honeybee. Being able to assess the risks associated with poor apiary hygiene, disease hot spots, overstocking and habitat loss, puts the beekeeper in control. A clear benefit of the Micro-credential is increased productivity (under the right weather conditions) which is reflected in the amount of surplus honey available to the beekeeper should they choose to harvest it.
